Mandatory Sick Time in Arizona – Are you ready for July 1st?

June 26, 2017 - 2 minutes read

As a business owner, I am sure that you’re aware of the Arizona Pop 206 that was passed in the fall of 2016. Prop 206 is the “Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act” that was passed by the voters of our state. The Act included the new minimum wage that was effective beginning January 1, 2016 and earned paid sick time that is effective beginning hmmmm… right about now, July 1, 2017.

We just wanted to send a friendly reminder that the new “Earned Paid Sick Time” goes into effective July 1, 2017. For those of you who use outside payroll services, we would strongly suggest that you contact your service before 7/1/2017 to confirm everything is in place to meet the new regulations. For those employers who process their own payroll you will need to set this up in your system to begin accrued time starting on 7/1/2017.

Here are the basics of the Earned Paid Sick time Ruling:

Employers with 15 or more employees: Employees must accrue a minimum of one hour of earned paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, but employees are not entitled to accrue or use more than 40 hours of earned paid sick time per year, unless the employer sets a higher limit.

For employers with fewer than 15 or more employees: Employees must accrue a minimum of one hour of earned paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, but employees are not entitled to accrue or use more than 24 hours of earned paid sick time per year, unless the employer sets a higher limit.
